Job Summary: The News Editor will oversee The Daily Signal’s news content, working with reporters to break compelling, well-written stories and drive the day’s news cycle to maximize editorial impact. This role combines hands-on editing with strategic news judgment to shape coverage, deliver scoops, and challenge reporters to produce their best work.

The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $115,000 annually. Job Summary: The News Editor will oversee The Daily Signal’s news content, working with reporters to break compelling, well-written stories and drive the day’s news cycle to maximize editorial impact. This role combines hands-on editing with strategic news judgment to shape coverage, deliver scoops, and challenge reporters to produce their best work.
Job Duties:
- Write compelling headlines that offer an incentive to click, select photos for inclusion in content, and assist in selecting content for and editing daily email newsletters.
- Edit 8-14 articles daily, moving with speed while ensuring each article or video script is compelling, optimized for traffic and impact, and adheres to in-house and AP style.
- Demonstrate strong news judgment and regularly suggest ideas for news stories or additional reporting that would enhance existing assignments.
- Collaborate with reporters by offering substantive feedback, source suggestions, and original reporting.
- Review news content for factual accuracy and legal or ethical risks, comprehensively analyzing each story and altering other editors of concerns.
- Encourage original and investigative news content, serving as a source of ideas and identifying weaknesses or unanswered questions during content review.
- Work closely with Daily Signal digital team to set and enforce editorial standards, ensuring all content is optimized for social media sharing, and suggest to the digital team news content that could be adapted for digital platforms.
- Contribute to The Daily Signal’s impact reports and traffic analytics, continuously advising on ways to improve both.
- Represent The Daily Signal at appropriate media conferences and related functions, while maintain an active presence on X and other social media platforms to promote content.
- Coach interns and less experienced staff on news writing, reporting, and editing.
